Habitat connectivity in agricultural landscapes improving multi-functionality of constructed wetlands as nature-based solutions

چکیده

The prevention of biodiversity loss in agricultural landscapes to protect ecosystem stability and functions is major importance itself for the maintenance associated services. Intense agriculture leads a species richness homogenization pools as well fragmentation natural habitats groundwater pollution. Constructed wetlands stand nature-based solutions (NBS) buffer degradation water quality by intercepting transfer particles, nutrients pesticides between crops surface waters. In karstic watersheds where sinkholes short-cut directly increasing resource vulnerability, constructed are recommended mitigate pollutants. also have potential improve landscape connectivity providing refuge breeding sites wildlife, especially amphibians. We propose here methodology identify optimal locations pollution mitigation using from perspective habitat connectivity. use ecological niche modelling at regional scale model suitability nine amphibian species, infer how impedes movements. combine those results graph theory priorities operational an catchment area. Our framework allowed us areas point view analyze effect multifunctional aiming both reduce overall More generally, we show assessment multifunctionality NBS mitigation.

Pathogen Removal by Agricultural Constructed Wetlands in Cold Climates

Constructed treatment wetlands have been found to remove fecal coliform (FC) through a variety of mechanisms. This research evaluated the removal of FC in both warm and cold seasons from surface flow treatment wetlands in Bible Hill, Nova Scotia. Two wetlands (100 m), of differing depths were monitored over a 17 month period. The wetlands were loaded with dairy wastewater (average inlet FC conc...

Frugivorous Bats Maintain Functional Habitat Connectivity in Agricultural Landscapes but Rely Strongly on Natural Forest Fragments

Anthropogenic changes in land use threaten biodiversity and ecosystem functioning by the conversion of natural habitat into agricultural mosaic landscapes, often with drastic consequences for the associated fauna. The first step in the development of efficient conservation plans is to understand movement of animals through complex habitat mosaics. Therefore, we studied ranging behavior and habi...

Reciprocating constructed wetlands for treating industrial, municipal and agricultural wastewater.

Scientists at the Tennessee Valley Authority (TVA), and in collaboration with the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), are continuing to develop and refine an innovative wastewater treatment system referred to as reciprocating subsurface-flow constructed wetlands. Reciprocation relates to patented improvements in the design and operation of paired subsurface-flow constructed wetlands, su...

Remediation in Constructed Wetlands

Constructed wetlands are in use to improve the quality of contaminated groundwaters at many sites in the USA. Target contaminants include both organic and inorganic constituents. Volatile and nonvolatile hydrocarbons are found in ground water at closed petroleum refinery sites, and in leachates from landfills. Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons are pollutants at many sites. Chlorinated organics o...
